Russell Brand wants to be "independent" from Katy Perry.
The British comedian - who married the 'Firework' singer in an intimate ceremony in India in October - is said to be taking driving lessons in Los Angeles so he no longer has to rely on his new wife to chauffer him around.
An insider explained: "While Russell in the past has been chauffeured around Los Angeles by Katy, he now wants to be an independent husband by getting his driver's licence.
"Russell's goal is to be able to drive around town by himself very soon. He has been taking daily driving lessons and is very focused on getting his licence as quickly as possible. He seems very excited about driving."
The 35-year-old funnyman has even been spotted giving a homeless man $20 when he stopped at a red traffic light on one of his lessons.
The eyewitness added to People magazine: "A homeless man was begging for money by a stop light and as soon as Russell saw the man, he reached for his wallet and gave the man a $20 bill.
"Russell seemed very pleased that he was able to help the man and he even jokingly told the man to wait in the same spot the next day."

Kelly Osbourne almost wet herself during a recent TV appearance.
The 26-year-old star - who is the daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne - was so stunned to be surprised by a person disguised as Super Mario's gorilla pal Donkey Kong on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show that she couldn't control her response, much to the delight of the studio audience.
She explained: "I'm always happy to appear on Ellen DeGeneres' show, she's one of my favourites - but she loves scaring her guests.
"We were chatting about stuff when somebody dressed up as Donkey Kong snuck up and scared the s**t out of me. I screamed and I think I even weed a little!
"But because they properly terrified me everyone in the audience got a Nintendo Wii. Ellen even gave one to me."
As well as on the Ellen show, Kelly also failed to keep her emotions in check when she saw the pictures of her recent shoot for Shape magazine, admitting she broke down in tears after seeing herself look trim in a bikini.
She wrote in her column for Closer magazine: "When I saw the photos for my Shape cover shoot, I burst into tears. I honestly never thought I'd be the girl wearing a bikini on the front of a magazine - especially considering that throughout my whole life so many people called me fat and ugly.
"I was so nervous back in September when we did the shoot but it turned out to be an amazing experience and I even got teary when I saw the first shot of the day on the photographer's computer screen.
"I'm so pleased with the pictures - I just honestly cannot believe it's me."

Leona Lewis is planning to move in with her new boyfriend.
The 'Bleeding Love' hitmaker - who split from Lou Al-Chamaa earlier this year after a 10-year relationship - is reportedly hoping to settle down in Los Angeles with dancer Dennis Jauch early next year.
A source told Britain's more! magazine: "Dennis has met some of Leona's closest American friends and so far so good.
"The next step is moving in together in the new year. They're such a great couple and he's really into her."
While Leona - who has been dating Dennis since August - is moving on with her relationship, it seems that Lou is still upset about their split.
He recently took to twitter to make an apparent dig at German Dennis, slamming his sense of style.
He posted: "Certain European guys have no style and awful dress sense. hahahahaha
"U can teach someone to dance. but you can't teach style. (Sic)"
The former electrician also hinted Leona had cheated on him.
He wrote: "Five months now and I still don't have my things. I've had enough.
"At least I can say I was faithful. can you?"

Prince William and Kate Middleton will invite 100 members of the public to their wedding via a random draw.
The couple - who will tie the knot in a lavish ceremony at London's Westminster Abbey on April 29 next year - want the British people to be deeply involved in the celebrations and are delighted their plan of inviting a selection of ordinary citizens has been approved.
A source involved with the St James's Palace planning committee revealed: "William and Kate wanted the British people involved at a deeper level than simply holding street parties.
"They were crystal clear on this from the outset and were delighted when the idea of a random selection was mooted.
"Those lucky enough to land an invitation will only find out when it drops on their door mat. Can you imagine? It's like winning a Willy Wonka Golden Ticket for your front-row seat in history."
Along with receiving an invitation to the royal ceremony, the lucky 100 guests - who will mix with a host of international royals and heads of state expected to include US President Barack Obama - will also attend the reception which will reportedly be held at Buckingham Palace.
The source added to The Sun newspaper: "The fortunate few will become the envy of their neighbourhood.
"They will rub shoulders with royalty and world leaders - what a thing to tell your grandchildren."
It has not yet been decided how the invited members of the public will be chosen.
Meanwhile William's younger brother, Prince Harry will take on the role of Supporter for his brother.
A royal source said: "It will be an incredibly emotional day for Harry as well as William.
"They will both be thinking about how proud their mother Princess Diana would be if she had lived to see this wedding. People sometimes forget what those boys have been through. William couldn't have chosen anyone else."
Royals usually choose two Supporters or Best Men but it is unclear if William will follow this tradition.
The source explained: "William is very much his own man. He is undecided if he will go for another Supporter or who that will be."
If William does choose it is likely his best friend Thomas van Straubenzee will share the duties with Harry, 26.

Gwyneth Paltrow found gaining weight for a recent movie role "a nightmare".
The Oscar-winning actress - who had to gain 20 pounds for new film 'Country Strong' - admitted she "panicked" when she became aware that she wouldn't be able to stick to her strict diet and exercise regime.
She explained: "The nightmare thing about it is I had to stop working out. At first I panicked so I would work out a little bit and then I had to lie and be like, 'No I didn't work out'. I'd be on the treadmill and be like, 'I really have to stop this'.
"My body didn't really fall apart until right after we finished the movie and now I'm having problems."
However, the 38-year-old star - who is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - confessed she enjoyed being able to drink more for the role, as she is "a lush".
She told talk show host Chelsea Handler on 'Chelsea's Big Interview Special': "I drink a lot. I like red wine, but I'll drink white, rose. Guinness is my favourite beer, I like a dirty vodka martini. I'm just a lush, basically."
