Michael Douglas

(BANG) -

Michael Douglas received a standing ovation at last night's (16.01.11) Golden Globe awards.

The 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' star - who has recently been given the all-clear after treatment for cancer in his throat - was delighted to make his first public appearance since beating the disease to present an award at the Los Angeles ceremony.

As the crowd stood to applaud his entrance, Michael quipped: "There's gotta be an easier way to get a standing ovation.

"Thank you all very much. I'm really very, very happy to be here tonight. It's nice to be back, it's my first time out this year."

He then announced that 'The Social Network' had won the Best Picture (Drama) award.

Earlier in the evening, Michael - who was accompanied to the ceremony by wife Catherine Zeta-Jones - had spoken of his relief at beating cancer.

He told E! News: "Tumour's gone, and this type of cancer doesn't usually come back. I gotta check in every month. I'm so happy to be out. This is our first time out in months and months, and to be able to come to this thing cancer-free is pretty special."

Michael, 66, was up for the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Gordon Gekko in 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps', but lost out to Christian Bale for his role in 'The Fighter'.

The actor - who has children Dylan, 10, and Carys, seven, with Catherine, as well as 32-year-old Cameron from a previous marriage - is also reportedly in talks with a publishing house to write his autobiography, reflecting on his life in Hollywood, loves and his six months of treatment for his throat cancer.

Colin Firth

(BANG) -

Colin Firth was named Best Actor at last night's (16.01.11) Golden Globes.

The 50-year-old actor was given the prestigious accolade for his portrayal of stammering British monarch King George VI in 'The King's Speech' and had the audience at Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton Hotel in fits of laughter as he accepted the award.

He quipped: "To get to this stage of your life with your dignity and judgment intact can be somewhat precarious.

"Sometimes all you need is a bit of gentle reassurance to keep you on track but right now this (the award) is all that stands between me and a Harley Davidson."

While Colin was named Best Actor, Natalie Portman received the accolade for Best Actress for her portrayal of a tortured ballerina in 'Black Swan'.

The 29-year-old beauty - who is expecting her first baby with fiance Benjamin Millepied - said: "Thank you to my parents for bringing me into this world and giving me this beautiful life. And thank you to Benjamin for helping me to bring more creation into the world."

The 'Social Network' - about the creation of the Facebook website - was named Best Picture in the drama category and also won prizes for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.

Ronnie Wood

(BANG) -

Ronnie Wood and Jimi Hendrix were thrown out of the flat they shared because of their dog.

The Rolling Stones rocker shared a flat with the legendary musician and friend Pat Arnold in London's Notting Hill but Pat asked them both to leave when they failed to house train Ronnie's pooch.

Ronnie explained: "I shared a flat with Jimi in Notting Hill Gate for a couple of weeks. He was quite a gentle flatmate. He gave me a dog - a basset hound called Loopy.

"We were living with Pat Arnold, who was the singer in The Ikettes but she threw me and Jimi out because the dog kept s***ting everywhere."

Although they only lived together for a few weeks, 63-year-old Ronnie still remembers the pair's impromptu jamming sessions in the flat and admits he was overawed by his late pal's prowess on guitar.

He recalled: "We did used to sit on the bed and exchange ideas on the guitar. He could flip it over and play equally well left or right-handed. Like Ronnie O'Sullivan with the snooker cue."

Katie Price

(BANG) -

Katie Price is demanding a divorce from Alex Reid.

The glamour model has branded her cage fighting spouse of 11 months a "fame hungry sponger" and reportedly banished him to a dressing room in her mansion in Surrey, Southern England.

Katie, 32, is said to have told friends: "I need him out of my house, and I need him out of my life for good. I convinced myself that I was in love with him, but looking back I probably wasn't."

Katie has made it clear her marriage is over and reportedly prepared a statement, but withheld it after Alex, 35, begged her for more time to discuss their relationship and come to terms with the split.

A friend close to Katie told the News Of The World newspaper that she had said: "It's over. There is no way we are going to work this out. I want Alex to leave this relationship with a scrap of self-respect."

The model married Alex in Las Vegas, US, in February 2010, but claims he has since become obsessed with fame, and compared him to first husband, singer Peter Andre, whom she divorced in 2009.

Katie reportedly told friends: "I thought Alex was an easy-going athlete who had no interest in showbiz, fame or wanting a TV career like Pete.

"He was just the opposite of all that, just an ordinary bloke. I loved the fact he wasn't in my world. But as soon as he got to my world, he wanted to be in it himself.

"He wanted to become a TV personality like me, a magazine columnist like me and advertise clothes like me. I hated that."

Alex - who married Katie without a pre-nuptial agreement - is reportedly asking for £1million for their split, though Katie is thought to have agreed to pay him only £250,000, the figure she believes he has earned during their marriage.

Simon Cowell

(BANG) -

Simon Cowell is nicer than he pretends to be.

Dermot O'Leary - who fronts British TV talent show 'The X Factor' - admits he was pleasantly surprised when he first started working on the programme because the head panellist is not as tough as he is perceived.

Dermot said: "I think the whole Mr. Nasty think was always a bit of a facade. When I first started I expected him to be some ogre but he's not like that at all.

"What's great about Simon is that with someone awful yet quite fragile, he's a metaphorical arm around the shoulder far more than you think he is. If people can handle it they'll get it, but you see people come on and get booed and he'll make sure they walk off that stage feeling a million dollars.

"He's a lot nicer than people give him credit for."

Though Dermot admits he enjoys working with Simon, he and the rest of the people who work with the music mogul hate to let him down.

He added: "Don't get me wrong, he's still my boss, but he's sort of a Victorian father - you'd hate to let him down. On the occasion that happens I literally feel sick."

While Dermot would love to continue working with Simon by taking a role on the US 'X Factor' he is trying not to worry about it.

He said: "I'm keeping my head out of it. I want to do it but I'm being philosophical about it. If I get it that's fantastic and if I don't, I don't."
