Carey Mulligan is a "practical romantic".
The 'Never Let Me Go' actress - whose relationship with actor Shia LaBeouf ended in October - can't understand why people play games in relationships and prefers to be honest about her feelings.
She said: "I love love stories, and acting in love stories, so I suppose that's the romantic side of me but I am quite practical.
"My friends at school used to say, 'If a guy texts, you can't text back for three days.' I was always like, 'B******s! Text back.' I'm a practical romantic.
"I'm a hopeless romantic and I always say how I feel. I say things as I think them."
Carey, 25, believes her open attitude leads to less problems in her relationships.
She explained to LOOK magazine: "I can be in a mood for half a day and then say everything, but I would never hold on to a feeling for years.
"I think it's better to be open most of the time. If you put something out there and it doesn't work, then you can forget about it and carry on."

Robbie Williams is planning a musical about his life.
The British singer - who shot to fame as a member of Take That, who he joined when he was just 15 years old - has given his permission for his solo material to be used in a new show being planned for the London stage and bosses have already started auditioning for two "Robbies".
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Robbie is bang up for the musical and thinks it will be a fun production.
"He loves West End shows and is honoured they will be doing one about his life."
A musical based on the life and career of the 'Angels' singer is sure to be filled with drama, from his rise to fame with Take That, to his dramatic departure in 1995, leading him to forge a successful solo career and eventually be honoured with more BRIT Awards than any other artist.
The 36-year-old pop star has also been in rehab several times to be treated for alcohol and drug addictions but has credited his marriage to actress Ayda Field last summer with providing some stability in his life.
He said recently: "Married life is a bit wonderful to be honest, yeah, it really is. Stability and happiness, I'm getting used to it but, you know, it was bound to happen at some point.
"Life feels different, there's like 15 per cent of rubbish that you're carrying round with you, well me anyway, that's just disappeared. It's great being part of a team."
In 2007, a musical based on the songs of Take That toured the UK, before enjoying a London residency the following year.

Carey Mulligan never gets recognised when she goes out.
The British actress - whose relationship with actor Shia LaBeouf ended in October - feels lucky because she doesn't have to do anything to alter her appearance if she wants a quiet day out.
She said: "I don't have to do anything! Hand on heart, I've never been stopped in the street by anyone. Ever. No one recognises me, which is great."
However, her apparent anonymity has led the 25-year-old actress having to sit next to people openly criticising her latest movie 'Never Let Me Go'.
She revealed: "My life hasn't really changed. I don't have to alter anything about my life, really.
"I was sitting in a gondola at Telluride Film Festival with six people who had just watched 'Never Let Me Go'. They were having a conversation about it and criticising it and I was sitting there and they had no idea."
Carey - who won the Best Actress BAFTA for her performance in 'An Education' - believes it has been her choice of roles that has helped her stay under the radar.
She explained to LOOK magazine: "I think that fame comes with big films where people are playing characters, like comic book movies, and an audience has ownership over that person. For the films I have been in so far, the fan base is different."

Dame Judi Dench was honoured with the Dorchester Outstanding Achievement Award at a ceremony in London today (25.01.11).
The 76-year-old actress was presented with the prize by theatre legend Sir Peter Hall - who first worked with her in 1962 - at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards at the Dorchester Hotel and although a clearly emotional Judi revealed she was delighted with the honour, she joked in her acceptance speech she hoped this wasn't the end of her career.
Judi said: "I'm so overwhelmed by this and I hope it doesn't mean I've got to finish now and not go on working. I'm very alarmed about that because I've got a year planned out now and I want to go on doing it if I can."
Other winners at the event - which was hosted by Melvyn Bragg - included low budget movie 'Monsters' which won the Best Film award, presented to director Gareth Edwards by Rupert Grint and 'This is England '86', which took home the top honours in the Best Drama category beating 'Misfits' and 'Sherlock Holmes'.
Plan B beat off stiff competition from Foals and Tinie Tempah to win the Best Pop award presented by Ronnie Wood and the Rolling Stones legend revealed he is a fan of the rapper.
He told BANG Showbiz: "I haven't listened to a hell of a lot of his stuff but I have that album 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' and I like the song 'Prayin'. It's a really good song."

Colin Firth celebrated his Best Actor Oscar nomination with some early morning champagne.
The 50-year-old star - who is favourite to win the prestigious award at next month's ceremony for his portrayal of stuttering British monarch King George VI in 'The King's Speech' - admitted he treated himself to some fizz as soon as he heard the news even though it was still early.
He said of the nomination: "I'm currently celebrating with my colleagues three feet above the ground. Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour."
While Colin has already indulged in some alcohol, Best Supporting Actor nominee Mark Ruffalo is saving the champagne to share with his wife Sunrise Coigney tonight (25.01.11) after their three children have gone to bed.
The 'Kids Are All Right' star said: "We got a bottle of Veuve Clicquot in the refrigerator that we couldn't drink because we had the stomach flu on New Year's Eve (31.12.10), so we're going to bust that baby out tonight!"
One nominee who won't be able to celebrate with champagne is pregnant Natalie Portman but the 29-year-old beauty admits it's a huge "honour" to be given the nod for Best Actress for her role in 'Black Swan'.
Paying tribute to the film's director Darren Aronofsky, she said: "I am so honoured and grateful to the Academy for this recognition. It is a wonderful culmination of the 10-year journey with Darren to make this film. Making 'Black Swan' is already the most meaningful experience of my career, and the passion shown for the film has completed the process of communication between artists and audience. I am so thankful for the support we have received and I share this honour with the entire cast and crew of the film, especially Darren Aronofsky."
The winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony on February 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, which will be presented by Anne Hathaway and James Franco, who is competing against Colin for Best Actor for his role in '127 Hours'.
